Yes, I am doing the same too.  But I am still considering a single band
one for cost reason, which some new models can receive AM/VHF and/or
UHF as well.

One thing to watch out is the buzz word here "intermod rejection".  The
more broad-band, the worst/hardest to filter, thus more intermod for
ham-type radios.  It is hard to pick out the max. range of the radios
as they are usually not accurate on US mag. reviews and not listed on
their ads.  Some of the Japanese mags do list them but I don't have all
the months to make a good list.  Usually collection of what people review
here on the net is good, but I couldn't find any archive on ftp sites.

Not only this is not listed, but the sensitivity varies a lot on the
HTs which have them.  A lot of HTs actually can do all of the above,
and I wonder why the mobiles are always a bit less (to have better filters?)

That is usually very rare and I haven't recalled one. I'll be kinda interested
also, but I don't think so.  I also heard some Standard HT can do that, but
I know my C550 (same as C558A) cannot do it.

What is the range of the Alinco 600?  As far as receivers and radios go,
I think I trust Standard best, and Yaesu second.  Icom has been best in
the old days.  Kenwood seems to attract the most boos for bad intermod
rejection. (but I also heard contrary stories.)

If you need a truly complete list of ftp sites with ham radio related files,
type "archie hamradio" (without the quotes) from your main prompt inside
your account. The archie server is a bit like a database that searches for
whatever your subject is. It will give you a list of ALL ftp sites with
ham radio related files or directories. Your host should be connnected to
the archie server. Good luck.

I used to live in SD and has been to that HRO many times, I was back
visiting and visited that store, oh, boy, they have more stuff now :).

I seriously doubt if the Kenwood can lock the PLL (actually receiving)
below about 90 or 100MHz. And also transmitting the full 400-512MHz. The
display might say so, but the VFO and the rest might not.

Only diff. is the Kenwood can do AM in all VHF and UHF (may be not 800 band)
but Yaesu can only do it in the 110 to 138MHz?? (Mine Standard C550/C558A

Mine picked up quiet passages ok, once the loudness is out (high deviation)
then it's all clipped. Not useful at all.

Kenwood can also send alphanumeric pagings to other Kenwoods, if that is
good for you.  I really like the idea, but since most people don't like
Kenwood due to rumors of bad intermod rejection and hard to use interface,
they are not popular and thus the actual usage is not much besides few who
own it.  Yaesu 530 doesn't have alpha numeric, the speaker/mic is a back-
lit display and buttons simpler than on the radio. about $100. The new
Ft-11 micro size single band HT has alpha numeric memory but no alphanumeric
paging. (also by Yaesu.)

I think almost all HT sold in US includes CTCSS encode and decode while
most mobile/base only includes encode and decode is optional. CTCSS is
(depends on whom you asked :) Continuous Tone Coded Squelsh System, aka
sub-audio tone, also called PL (Private Line) by Motorola, or Select Call
by GE.  It is from about 67Hz to about 250Hz selectable from a table to
key up repeaters to open squelsh on others' radios.

Yes, as it is using the other band receiver to receive far away, thus
weakening the filter job/design.  Currently there is no good cure except
they put in multiple switched filters.

One BIG reason I refused to buy the Kenwood as if I need a video game,
I can get something else, even to download one for my HP48SX prog. calculator.
If there are space left in the Kenwood uP rom, why don't they put in something
useful? like calculating/estimating remaining time battery usage, may be
even some memory management software.

They all have merits, but the only one I would buy (again) is either
the Standard (which I have a similar model) or Yaesu.  But W21AT has
the cellular phone style microphone being lower in the battery area,
which is nice doing phonepatch.  Alinco's only merit is lower price.
Kenwood if you want the latest alphanumeric functionality (which I really
like to have, but not at a sacrifice of other areas.)

Subject: Radio Shack's New DSP Filter

I recently purchased the DSP-40 from Radio Shack.  I have had the Timewave
DSP-9 for
some time now.  Is it worth the extra sixty or so dollars? I would say no.
 The DSP-40
will do most everything that the DSP-9 will do with fewer switches.  I think
it is only an
8 bit processor but that only limits its audio dynamic range.  Here is my
humble
evaluation of the DSP-40 using a Yaesu FT-890 as the receiver.


Good Things:
1.  It is cheap, $80.
2 . The notch on SSB and Noise reduction mode is very good, maybe not quite
as fast
    as the DSP-9 but fast enough.  Once it locks on a carrier it is gone.
 You can
    retune your rig and it tracks very quickly, in about half a second or
so.
3.  Both the CW and SSB bandpass have very sharp cutoff.  The CW has a very
narrow mode
    that doesn't ring, even in high noise situations such as 160 meters.
    I was impressed with it.  It is a bit strange to see your S-Meter
jumping at around
    S-9 or higher while you receive a weak signal.
4.  The NOISE mode works quite well to remove the harshness from the
background noise on
    the lower bands (40 and down).  My receiver is pretty good at doing that
anyway so
    I was not really impressed with the noise filter.

Not so Good Things:
1.  It requires a hefty power supply, 750ma or better at 12 volts.  It
states that it will
    work with 500ma but don't try it.  The poor little adapter gets pretty
hot.
2.  The audio input level is pretty critical.  You must adjust the audio
input so that it is just
    right.  If you don't, either the filter will not work properly or you
will get significant
    distortion.  This is probably because of the 8 bit processor, not a big
problem.
3.  No low-level audio input.  You must use the external speaker output on
your rig if
    it has one.  You can use the headphone output but the audio level must
be set so high
    that it will blow you out of the shack if you forget to turn it down
before you unplug
    the jack.
4.  It does produce a little RFI but it will filter out any RFI that it
creates.  I think
    that a metal case instead of the plastic one would fix that.

5.  BIGGEST COMPLAINT:  IT HAS A MONO HEADPHONE JACK!!!!  I think that every
rig on the market
    (at least the newer ones) will accept stereo headphones.  They couldn't
have spent that
    extra fifteen cents or so and put a stereo jack in the silly thing!


Overall it is a pretty good piece of equipment.  I think that they could
have included an AC
adapter with it.

Ar you sure that the noise filter works?  Perhaps a difference that
you heard were from different bandwidths of NR and SSB modes.
According to another ham, a discussion with RS DSP developers on
Compuserve revealed that RS DSP has no NR function to keep the price
down.  Then, descriptions of NR function would be just a misleading
marketing.

I love mine. It is more expensive than other radios, by the time you add
the optional faceplate. Still the controls are complete and pretty easy
to use. The only thing that I do not like about Standards radios is that
there is no way to write a memory chanel to the VFO. This is a problem
with both the C5608DA and the C5718DA. I have both.

Not True.  Although not documented, if you put a UHF frequency in
the left side of the FT-530, and enable A3E mode, you will decode
UHF frequencies in AM mode.  Maybe not as convenient.  Now, HOW they
do A3E detection is a kludge.  Look at the schizmos and take a look :-)
